Marshall finished the 2025 season 8-5 overall and 6-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Thundering Herd returns to State College for the first time since 2016, when Penn State won 45-6.

Key storyline: Campbell brought 39 transfers from Iowa State and other programs to Penn State during the 2025-2026 offseason, creating the largest roster overhaul in program history. Quarterback Rocco Becht, who transferred from Iowa State, is projected to start the season opener.

Temple — Saturday, September 12, 2026

Penn State travels to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to face Temple on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The Nittany Lions hold a 40-3-4 all-time record against the Owls.

The neutral-site matchup at the home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles represents Penn State’s only non-conference road game in 2026. Temple finished 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the American Athletic Conference in 2025.

Attendance projection: Lincoln Financial Field holds 69,796 fans. The 2015 Penn State-Temple game at the venue drew 68,756 spectators.

Buffalo — Saturday, September 19, 2026

Penn State hosts Buffalo at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in the final non-conference game before Big Ten play begins. The Nittany Lions are 2-0 all-time against the Bulls, with wins in 2015 (27-14) and 2023 (34-27).

Matt Campbell Era: New Leadership and Roster Overhaul

Coaching Change Background

Matt Campbell became Penn State’s 17th head coach on December 8, 2025, replacing James Franklin, who departed for Virginia Tech. Campbell signed a seven-year contract worth $62 million, making him the fourth-highest-paid coach in college football.

Campbell compiled a 70-44 record at Iowa State from 2016 to 2025, including three consecutive eight-win seasons from 2020 to 2022. He led the Cyclones to six bowl appearances and won the 2020 Big 12 Championship Game, Iowa State’s first conference title since 1912.

Franklin’s departure: James Franklin left Penn State after 11 seasons with an 85-41 record. He departed following a disappointing 6-6 regular season in 2025 that included six consecutive Big Ten losses from October through November.

Transfer Portal Rebuild

Penn State added 39 transfers during the 2025-2026 offseason under Campbell, the largest single-offseason roster overhaul in FBS history. The transfers included 18 players from Iowa State, seven from Power Four programs, and 14 from Group of Five schools.

Key transfers include:

  • Rocco Becht (quarterback, Iowa State): Passed for 6,847 yards and 54 touchdowns in three seasons with the Cyclones
  • Carson Hansen (running back, Iowa State): Rushed for 2,156 yards and 21 touchdowns in four seasons
  • Benjamin Brahmer (tight end, Iowa State): Caught 87 passes for 1,023 yards and 9 touchdowns in three seasons

Penn State lost 34 players to the transfer portal following Franklin’s departure, including starting quarterback Drew Allar (declared for the 2026 NFL Draft) and backup Ethan Grunkemeyer (transferred to Virginia Tech).

Coaching staff retention: Penn State retained associate head coach Terry Smith, who coached running backs under Franklin from 2020 to 2025. Campbell hired Taylor Mouser from Iowa State as offensive coordinator.

2026 Recruiting Class Context

Penn State’s 2026 high school recruiting class ranks 63rd nationally according to 247Sports composite rankings as of January 2026. This represents the lowest-ranked class for Penn State since 2012 (67th nationally).

The recruiting class decline resulted from Franklin’s late-season departure and Campbell’s December hiring, which left only six weeks before National Signing Day on February 4, 2026. Penn State signed 14 high school prospects in the 2026 class compared to 23 in the 2025 class.

Top 2026 signees:

  • Peyton Falzone (quarterback, 4-star, Pittsburgh, Pa.): Ranked 8th-best pro-style quarterback nationally
  • Mason Bandhauer (offensive line, 4-star, York, Pa.): Ranked 15th-best offensive tackle nationally

Previous major renovations:

  • 2001: Upper deck addition (cost: $94 million, added 13,315 seats)
  • 1980: South end zone expansion (cost: $18 million, added 16,000 seats)
  • 1960: Original expansion from 46,284 to 57,538 seats (cost: $3 million)

Current capacity ranking: Beaver Stadium ranked as the fourth-largest stadium in college football during the 2025 season (107,282 capacity). The temporary configuration drops Penn State to seventh nationally for 2026.

Premium Seating Availability

Penn State offers limited premium seating options during the 2026 season due to ongoing construction. The east-side club seats and suites remain operational, providing 3,500 premium seats for the 2026 campaign.

College Football Playoff Implications for 2026

12-Team Playoff Format

The 2026 College Football Playoff features 12 teams under the expanded format implemented in 2024. The playoff includes the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large selections.

Automatic qualifiers: The champions of the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12 conferences receive automatic bids as the four highest-ranked conference champions. The fifth-highest-ranked conference champion also receives an automatic bid.

Bracket structure:

  • Seeds 1-4 (four highest-ranked conference champions): First-round byes
  • Seeds 5-12: First-round games at the higher-seeded team’s home stadium
  • Quarterfinals and semifinals: Neutral-site bowl games
  • National Championship: Neutral site (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia, for 2026)

Penn State’s Playoff Path

Penn State must win the Big Ten Championship to secure a first-round bye in the 2026 College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions compete in the Big Ten East Division, which includes Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers, Maryland, Michigan State, Indiana, and Northwestern.

Penn State’s path to the Big Ten Championship Game requires:

  • Winning the Big Ten East Division (requires the best conference record among division teams)
  • Defeating the Big Ten West Division champion in the Big Ten Championship Game (Saturday, December 5, 2026, at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana)

At-large bid scenario: Penn State can qualify for the playoff as an at-large selection with 10 or 11 wins even without winning the Big Ten, based on historical selection committee patterns from 2024-2025.

Strength of Schedule Considerations

Penn State’s 2026 non-conference schedule ranks as one of the weakest among Big Ten contenders, featuring no Power Four opponents. The Nittany Lions face Marshall, Temple, and Buffalo in non-conference play, compared to schedules like Ohio State (vs. Texas, vs. Alabama) and Michigan (vs. Notre Dame, vs. Oklahoma).

Selection committee members historically penalize teams for weak non-conference scheduling when comparing at-large candidates with similar records. Penn State’s 2016 team (11-2, Big Ten champions) ranked 5th in the final playoff rankings despite winning the conference, partially due to a non-conference schedule featuring Pitt, Temple, and Kent State.
